"Thanks," Bucky says quietly, and he isn't even sure why. Maybe he's grateful that she's treating him like a normal person, like someone she doesn't need to be afraid of. He's made so many people afraid of him for so long, and he hates that. He always wanted to be a good friend, someone loyal, someone who could always be relied upon, and they took that and twisted him into something terrifying.
But Dani obviously feels safe with him, alone out here on the beach and wrapped in his arms. It makes him unexpectedly emotional, and he presses his face into her hair as he wraps his arms a little more tightly around her, still careful not to squeeze her too tightly. He's not sure that he could even articulate what she's done for him.
He lets out a warm, shaking breath against her neck and it's only then that he realizes that he's pressed his face there. "It's been a very long time since I've--" He cuts himself off and swallows hard, touching his nose to the soft spot under her ear. "Too long, I think. So, thank you."
